OBSERVATION VIST - BSW 2025

As part of academic curriculum of the BSW programme, an organization visit was organized to provide students with practical insights in to the functioning of social welfare organizations. The visit aimed to enhance students understanding of institutional care, rehabilitation process and community development initiatives. The team comprising 58 students and 4 faculty members commenced the journey from the college premises on the evening of 25 th July 2025 9 pm and concluded on 28 th July 2025 morning 6 am. Visits to three reputed social welfare organizations were conducted on 26 th and 27 th July 2025. The team comprising 58 students and 4 faculty members.

Objectives of the Visit
• To understand the vision, mission and objectives of different social welfare organizations.
• To gain insight into the organizational structure, functioning, and service delivery models, funding of agency.
• To observe the various programs and services offered by the organizations.
• To interact with the staff, residents and beneficiaries.
• To bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application in the field of social work.


St. Mathews Bhavan (Visited on 26/07/2025)

St. Mathews Bhavan is a charitable institution dedicated to providing shelter, medical care, education, and vocational training to destitute individuals and those with physical and intellectual disabilities.

Key Observations:

  • Well-maintained residential facility with dormitories, kitchen, and recreation areas.
  • Availability of basic health care services, including periodic medical check-ups.•
  • Vocational training in tailoring, handicrafts, and small-scale gardening for rehabilitation.
  • Staff members are trained in social work, nursing, and rehabilitation services.
  • Strong emphasis on emotional support and psychosocial well-being of residents.

Peace Village (Visited on 26/07/2025)

Peace Village focuses on rehabilitation and social reintegration of marginalized individuals, including those abandoned by families or affected by social exclusion.

Key Observations:

  • Programs for skill development, such as carpentry, weaving, and agricultural work.
  • A community-based rehabilitation approach that involves local volunteers.
  • Psycho-social counselling services to improve self-esteem and confidence of beneficiaries.
  • Emphasis on sustainable livelihood generation for long-term independence.
  • The organization maintains partnerships with NGOs, government bodies, and community groups.
  • Muslim Orphanage (Visited on 27/07/2025)

The Muslim Orphanage is an established institution offering residential care, formal education, and vocational training to orphaned and economically disadvantaged children.
Key Observations:

  • Children are provided with formal schooling within the campus or in nearby schools.
  • Provision of nutritious meals, health care, and extracurricular activities.

Interaction with the Organization’s Staff

 The students had an interactive session with key staff members, including social workers,program coordinators, and administrative personnel. During this session, the following topics were discussed:
• Organizational structure and the roles of each department.
• The process of planning and implementing welfare programs.
• The challenges faced by the organization in delivering services to the community.
• The role of collaboration with governmental and non-governmental agencies in service delivery.

Student Reflections

  • The students found the visit to be highly informative and enlightening. Some of their key reflections include:
  • The importance of grassroots-level work in social welfare.• The need for strong organizational collaboration and community engagement.
  •  The real-life application of social work theories and models in solving societal issues.

Conclusion
The organization visits provided the BSW students with valuable insights in to the functioning of a welfare organization. The experience was instrumental in enhancing their understanding of the practical aspects of social work and the challenges involved in implementing welfare programs. The visit also inspired the students to contribute meaningfully to the welfare of society in their future professional endeavours.
