World Tourism Day

Mar Elias College's Department of Tourism Studies in association with NSS commemorated the occasion with a day-long program titled "Paryadan," featuring a clean-up drive at the Bhoothathankettu Dam on 27th September 2024. The event was part of the college’s ongoing efforts to promote responsible tourism and align with the global theme of sustainable development.
The main objectives of the program were:
    • To celebrate World Tourism Day by taking practical action towards sustainable tourism.
    • To promote environmental conservation and maintain the natural beauty of local tourist spots.
    • To instill the principles of responsible tourism and environmental stewardship among students.
The event began with an inaugural function at Bhoothathankettu Dam. The  Ward member, along with other dignitaries, addressed the gathering. They emphasized the significance of World Tourism Day and the importance of sustainable tourism practices. The keynote speaker, a representative from DTPC, discussed the role of tourism in local economic development and the need for preserving natural attractions.

Following the inauguration, participants, including around 50 students, faculty members, NSS volunteers, and local community members, commenced the clean-up drive. They were divided into groups to cover various sections of the dam and nearby areas. Equipped with gloves, garbage bags, and cleaning tools, the volunteers collected plastic waste, bottles, food wrappers, and other debris. The clean-up not only restored the natural beauty of the area but also set an example for other visitors.
The clean-up drive led to the collection of approximately 300 kilograms of waste, which was segregated for recycling and safe disposal. This helped in restoring the aesthetic appeal of Bhoothathankettu Dam and minimized the potential harm to wildlife.
