Introduction
On 29th July 2024, Mar Elias College, Kottappady, hosted a grand event titled "Be with the Olympic Flame," organized by the Department of Physical Education. The event was aimed at fostering Olympic values—excellence, respect, and friendship—among the students and staff through a series of engaging and educational activities. The event featured an Olympic Quiz, a football tournament, and an Olympic Prediction Contest, all of which reflected the college's dedication to sportsmanship and physical fitness.
Programme Highlights
1. Department-wise Olympic Quiz:
The event commenced with a department-wise Olympic Quiz, which saw enthusiastic participation from students across various disciplines. The quiz, conducted by Quiz
Master Ms. Reshma Krishnan, Assistant Professor, Department of Commerce, tested the participants' knowledge on the history, events, and significance of the Olympic Games.
Winners:
o First Place: Amal Shaju & Pooja (III BSc Computer Science)
o Second Place: Niranjana & Adilsha (III BCA)
The prizes were distributed by Mr. Sunil Joseph, Manager, and Dr. Joseph T. Moolayil, Principal of Mar Elias College.
2. Department-wise Football Tournament:
A thrilling football tournament was held, featuring teams from various departments. The final match took place on 6th August 2024, with the Department of Social Work and the Department of Computer Science competing fiercely.Results:
o 1st Place: Department of Social Work
o 2nd Place: Department of Computer Science
The championship trophy was awarded to the winning team by Principal Dr. Joseph T. Moolayil.
3. Olympic Prediction Contest:
A unique Olympic Prediction contest was conducted for both students and staff, with separate questions provided to each group. Participants were asked to predict outcomes related to the 2024 Paris Olympics and submit their answers in boxes at the front office.
o For Students: The question focused on predicting India’s position in men's hockey at the Paris Olympics. Aneeta Karthika Sasi, a final B.Com Taxation student, was selected as the winner through a lot drawn by the Principal.
o For Staff: Staff members were asked to predict India's overall position at the 2024 Olympics. The prize went to Ms. Tintu Scaria, HOD, Department of Language, selected through a lot from the correct answers.
All winners were presented with attractive prizes during the Onam celebration, bringing excitement and joy to the festive occasion.
Conclusion
The "Be with the Olympic Flame" event was a resounding success, fostering a spirit of unity and sportsmanship. Organized by Mr. Mohanan S., HOD, Department of Physical Education, and assisted by staff coordinators Ms. Febeena O. S. and Ms. Lincy Babu, the event featured active participation from students and staff, creating a vibrant sports culture at Mar Elias College. Through this event, the college continues to uphold the Olympic values and promote
holistic development in its students. This event not only promoted the importance of physical fitness but also instilled the Olympic values of excellence, respect, and friendship. Through events like the quiz, football tournament, and prediction contest, Mar Elias College continues to nurture a vibrant sports culture, encouraging the holistic development of its students.
